When he formed Around the Bend Beer Co. back in 2014, our founder, Dan Schedler, believed there was a better way to brew. He knew that the giant mega-breweries only cared about saving a buck, so they brewed cheap, flavorless beer. They brewed boring beer and tried to convince people it was good because the can would turn blue when it was cold. WTF?!

No, there was a better way and it involved searching out forgotten beer styles and experimenting with non-traditional ingredients. This new way, at its core, was about navigating the road less traveled. It was about constantly searching for what might be around the next bend.

So that’s what we do. We take classic styles and imbue them with an experimental edge. Some of our beers are a little goofy. Others are delicate and refined. But they’re all damn delicious. So pour yourself a glass and let’s find out together what’s Around the Bend.

Around the Bend Beer Co.

Joe had an already impressive brewing career before joining ATB, with over 17 years experience under his belt. His first stint as Head Brewer was for Skagway Brewing Co. where he compiled many awards including best beer in South East Alaska. After a year in the wilds, Joe decided to move back to San Diego where he became an assistant at Pizza Port Brewing and then Alesmith (named best brewery in the world, 2013). After establishing himself in the market, Joe soon took over as the brew master for Sports City Caféand Brewery where he won multiple GABF and World Beer Cup awards. During his tenure at Sports City, he also became the original President of the San Diego Brewers Guild. He subsequently helped launch several upstart breweries including Green Flash Brewing Co. Joe has worked with some of the best brewers in the world. He is committed to making the highest quality, most innovative beers possible.

Dan functions as the day-to-day leader of the organization. Prior to launching the brewery, he accumulated nearly 20 years experience as an ad-man and marketer, leading teams large and small to achieve success for blue-chip brands. But corporate America began to weigh on him and the entrepreneurial bug bit hard. He was also a home-brewer for 20+ years before launching ATB. So when it came time to do something new, there was never really any question about which path he would follow. Dan also holds a certificate of completion from the Siebel Institute (America’s oldest brewing school) in brewing technology.

Juice Trials Hazy IPA 7%
Trials (noun): the act of trying, testing, or putting to the proof.
How much is too much when it comes to hops? How juicy can an IPA be? Dunno. Let’s find out. This fourth trial puts Mosaic, Simcoe and Bravo to the test revealing pronounced tropical fruit notes along with a bit of stone fruit. Examine the evidence for yourself — you be the judge.

Vera Pistachio Cream Ale 5%
Pistachios lend this delicate cream ale a luscious character and delicious flavor like no other beer you’ve tried before. We brew it with a touch of Caravienne malt, which adds slightly more body than your traditional cream ale. And at just 5% ABV, you’ll want to get crackin’ with more than one!

Acid Test Fermenter-Soured Ale 4.4%
It’s always been more about the journey for us. Because sometimes how you get there means as much as where you end up. So rather than a traditional kettle-sour method, this fruited sour ale uses a special type of yeast that produces lactic acid in the fermenter, developing a lightly puckering character. A dose of watermelon & sea salt adds contrast and balance to the trip. Get ready to blast off.

Pink Freud IPA w/Pink Grapefruit 6.0%
This refreshing, juicy pink-grapefruit-infused IPA will satisfy your every gustatorily repressed desire, but leave you with absolutely NO pink-fruit envy. Packed with Citra, Amarillo, Centennial, Cascade, Chinook hops.

Logger Lyfe Pseudo Lager 4.6%
This ain’t no sippin’ beer. You’re gonna have more than one of these – obvi. So, we kept it light and simple for ya. High quality Pilsen malt, a little rice, a little wheat and boom – flavor that won’t weigh you down. We used just enough Loral hops to add a nice floral, fruity and citrusy aroma without making it too bitter. Lutra Kveik ferments this sucker so clean, you’d swear it was a lager strain. So, grab some wings and start living your best Logger Lyfe!

Puffing Billy Brown Ale with Cacao Nibs 6.9%
We love Browns. And you should too! Roasty malts and chocolaty flavors – what’s not to love? Ours is finished with cacao nibs to add another nuanced layer of chocolate aroma & flavor to the already complex interplay of this well-balanced ale.

Strawberry Pie à la Mode Pastry Sour 6.0%
Lightly-soured ale with strawberry, ginger, milk-sugar & spelt flavors mimicking a sticky strawberry pie. Yum!

Soma Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout 11%
Demeter was the Greek goddess of the harvest, grain, and fertility. As such, she was closely associated with the brewing of early types of beer. It has been said that the Mysteries of Eleusis were a means to conquer death by drinking a magical brew from a vessel known as a Soma. This Imperial Stout may not deliver you insights of the afterlife, but it sure is tasty. Aged for 14 months in Elijah Craig barrels, its redolent with sticky dark-fruit, chocolate and tannins from the barrel. Let it roll around for a minute and see what visions it conjures for you.

Vixen Pistachio Cream Ale w/Cinnamon 5.0%
Like Vera? You’ll love her cousin, Vixen, who’s visiting for the Holidays. For a limited time only, we’ve got a special treat for you. We’ve taken our popular Pistachio Cream Ale and added a touch of Cinnamon for that warming, gang’s-all-gathered for the Holidays feeling. It’s as delicate in flavor as ever, brewed with Caravienne malt, for a touch of extra body. And at just five percent ABV, you’ll be rockin’ round the Christmas tree all night!

Pumpkin Pie Spiced Latte Ale 7.0%
As the weather turns cool, what makes you drool? Pumpkin pie spice and espresso so nice! This deep-amber colored ale will provide you that hit of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, allspice and ginger you crave. Dosed with a rich espresso-roast-cold-brew from Columbia and shot of milk sugar and you’ve got a dead ringer for the latte we all love!
